Prof. Bim Prasad Shrestha, PhD is currently a Professor at the School of Engineering, Kathmandu University. Since October 15, 2021, he has also been serving as an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington, Seattle.
He began his career as a lecturer at Tribhuvan University after completing his Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from Kerala Agricultural University, India, under a USAID Scholarship. His interest in agricultural mechanization, life sciences, and environmental conservation eventually led him to specialize in biosystems engineering.
Prof. Shrestha earned his Master’s degree in Agricultural Mechanization from the University of Miyazaki, Japan, and his PhD in the Science of Life, Environment, and Conservation, specializing in Agricultural Engineering, from Kagoshima University, Japan. Both degrees were completed under Japanese Government Scholarships. He subsequently undertook a postdoctoral fellowship in Bio-Systems Engineering at Michigan State University, USA, under a USDA program in 2004.
His research areas include automation, agriculture and rural development with a focus on the energy sector, image processing, spectral analysis, and sanitation. In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Prof. Shrestha actively fosters collaboration and partnerships with national and international universities and organizations. He has led various projects supported by institutions such as the World Bank, KOICA, JICA, JST, JASSO, IFS, DANIDA, the European Union, the U.S. Embassy/Department of State, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Prof. Shrestha is married to Anina Rajbhandari and is blessed with two children: a son, Abhi Shrestha, currently studying at Thammasat University in Bangkok, and a daughter, Aneeva Shrestha. He is fluent in Nepal Bhasa, Nepali, Hindi, Japanese, and English
